Car Rental with Driver in Paris: Cost vs Self-Drive

By PrivateDrive

Key takeaway

A car with driver in Paris costs €85/h, 3-hour minimum. What a self-drive rental adds: Crit’Air sticker, €6/h parking in central Paris, penalties.

Renting a car with a driver in Paris costs €85 an hour in a Mercedes E-Class, €120 in an S-Class and €100 in a V-Class, with a 3-hour minimum: €255 for the shortest E-Class booking. A self-drive rental looks cheaper on the agency’s daily rate, but in Paris it leaves three things to you: the Crit’Air sticker for the low-emission zone, paid street parking, and any penalty issued to the car while you hold it.

The PrivateDrive fleet is Mercedes: the E-Class and the S-Class take 3 passengers and 2 suitcases, the V-Class 7 passengers and 7 suitcases. Our E-Class or V-Class comparison helps pick the right one.

The Crit’Air sticker and the low-emission zone

The Greater Paris low-emission zone covers everything inside the A86 motorway, the A86 itself excluded. According to the City of Paris, cars rated Crit’Air 5, 4, 3 or unclassified may not drive there from Monday to Friday, 8 am to 8 pm, public holidays excepted, and displaying the Crit’Air sticker is mandatory to drive in the zone. The Métropole has extended its educational period to 31 December 2026: until then checks are informative and no penalty is applied. The sticker is still required, so ask the agency to confirm the car carries one. Our guide to the ZFE covers what it changes for visitors.

Parking costs more than the daily rate suggests

Street parking in Paris is paid Monday to Saturday from 9 am to 8 pm, public holidays excepted. For a standard car, the visitor rate set by the City of Paris is €6 an hour for the first two hours in zone 1 (1st to 11th arrondissements) and €4 in zone 2 (12th to 20th). Leave without paying and the post-parking charge equals six hours of parking: €75 in zone 1, €50 in zone 2.

Large cars pay more. Since 1 October 2024, a higher visitor rate applies to cars over 1,600 kg in running order with a combustion engine, or over 2,000 kg electric. The mass appears in field G of the registration certificate, which is worth checking on a large saloon or SUV before parking it in the centre.

With a driver there is no meter to feed: the car drops you at the door, and the driver handles where to wait until the time you set.

Penalties go to the name on the contract

A parking charge or a camera ticket is issued to the car, so it reaches the rental company first, and the rental contract sets how it is then charged to you. Read that clause before signing, especially for a stay of several days in the centre. A booked driver removes the question: you never hold the car.

When renting yourself is still the better choice

A road trip of several weeks with unplanned stops, or the pleasure of driving a particular car on open roads far from the city, works better with your own keys. A stay of a few days spent mostly inside the ring road rarely does: the rental stays parked between two short trips a day.

What a driver costs instead

BookingE-ClassS-ClassV-Class
3 hours (minimum)€255€360€300
5 hours€425€600€500
8 hours€680€960€800

Driving, stops and waiting count inside the block, which suits a shopping day from the Marais to avenue Montaigne or a client dinner. A trip out of Paris during the booking adds a supplement shown in the quote. For an arrival, a fixed transfer is simpler than collecting a rental car after a long flight: €125 from Charles de Gaulle to central Paris in an E-Class.

Two practical questions

Does the driver wait during a meeting or in front of a shop?

Yes. With hourly hire the car stays at your disposal for the booked time, and waiting counts the same as driving. You set the pickup time and place for the next leg.

What if the day runs longer than booked?

A 15-minute tolerance applies, then each hour started is billed at €105 in an E-Class, as set out in our service policy. Booking the hours you expect to use costs less.

Check the hourly price for your date and book the car with its driver.
